Medium sized Easter egg, a free crochet pattern for beginners
In preparation for Easter, I’ve never been able to find the perfect crocheted egg size. In most cases, I ended up with way too big or too small eggs! So this year I started researching, looking at different egg patterns, and finally, I came up with my own pattern to achieve the best Easter egg size! So here comes how you can crochet a beautiful, small, but not too small egg relatively quickly and easily!
Easter egg crochet pattern
Materials
- 3 mm hook (US D)
- 5 ply/sport weight yarn (I used Drops Safran)
- Toy stuffing
- Stitch marker
Sizing
If you work with the specified yarn size and crochet hook, the egg will be the size of a quail egg. It is 5 cm high and about 4 cm at its widest part.
Abbreviations
sc – single crochet
inc – single crochet increase
dec – single crochet decrease
rnd(s) – round(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
[ ] – repeat steps between brackets for the specified number of times
( ) – the number of stitches you should have at the end of each round
Notes
When crocheting, all sections are worked in a continuous round unless otherwise specified. Always mark the beginning of each round with a stitch marker.
Pattern
rnd 1: start with a magic ring, sc 10 into ring (10 sts)
rnd 2: [sc 4, inc 1] 2 times (12 sts)
rnd 3: [sc 5, inc 1] 2 times (14 sts)
rnd 4: [sc 6, inc 1] 2 times (16 sts)
rnd 5: [sc 3, inc 1] 4 times (20 sts)
rnd 6: [sc 4, inc 1] 4 times (24 sts)
rnd 7: [sc 5, inc 1] 4 times (28 sts)
rnd 8: sc around (28 sts for 1 rnd)
rnd 9: [sc 5, dec 1] 4 times (24 sts)
rnd 10: [sc 10, dec 1] 2 times (22 sts)
rnd 11: [sc 9, dec 1] 2 times (20 sts)
rnd 12: [sc 3, dec 1] 4 times (16 sts)
At this point, fill the egg with toy stuffing.
Rnd 13: [dec 1] 8 times (8 sts)
Rnd 14: [dec 1] 4 times (4 sts)
Cut the yarn, and pull through the remaining 4 stitches. You are done! It’s always better to make more than one of them, they look so much better in bigger quantities. You can put them in a neat little basket or hang them on some branches.

Embroidered eggs
You can add some extra final touches by embroidering your eggs. Here is a great video about how to embroider on crocheted Easter eggs:
Needle felting on eggs
Needle felting is a super technique, I just learned it recently. Here is a great video about how to needle felt on crocheted surfaces.
